The 2015 International Downhill Federation has posted its 2015 season calendar and some big changes stand out.
The Circuit similar to 2013 will have a 20 race roster. But instead of 11 World Cup races, the number has been trimmed down to 8.
Missing in Action
The biggest surprise to most will be to see that some some big names races have disappeared. Sector 9 Almabtrieb, Hot Heels Africa and Peyragudes Never Dies, All ranked as WC events in 2013, are gone. Along with them hoped form Germans, French and South African to have a chance of competing on home soil.
Same and New
Some event have been renamed but location remain the same and some new one got added. The IDf is back in Oceania after a year of hiatus in this part of the planet in 2014 after losing Newton’s Nation. New Zealand will step in with the Ruapheu Gravity Festival.
New Ranking System
Also new this year is the introduction of Continental Ranking. From it will be crowned South American Champions (5 races), North American Champions (9 races) European Champions (4 races) and ASEAN champions (2 races).
It’s a “Cup Tour” but is is a World Cup Tour anymore?
Some may start pondering whether the new calendar merits being called a World Cup Tour.
- 70% of races, will take place in North and South America.
- Europe will hold the only 2 WC race outside of North America.
- Philippines and New Zealand will only have 2 races to determine the ASEAN Champion
- Africa is non existent – What happened to Hot Heels?
Season kicks off in Puerto rico Feb 7 at Lago Cerillo.
