When things heat up in Flagler Beach on January 4th, there may be a few fireworks left from New Year’s as the IDSA can confirm that Robin “The Leg” McGuirk and Kaspar Heinrici, arguably the two best short distance pushers in the sport right now, will be participating in the weekend of events, including the One-Mile Guinness World Record challenge. Without a doubt, they will be pushing each other in both the one-mile and the half marathon and the anticipation is building, as we approach 2014.
The Leg had a spectacular 2013 and it was marked by the work he did in the IDSA Pacific Northwest tour featuring the Push in the Woods and the Centennial Trail Push Race. Robin was able to place 2nd in both the 5k and 10k at the Push in the Woods behind living legend Paul Kent. At the Centennial, he was able to beat out Paul in the 5k and mile races and just behind him in the half marathon. Kaspar’s year was highlighted with a 3rd place finish at the grueling 188-mile Chief Ladiga Silver Comet Challenge.
During the weekend, competitors will attempt to break Steven “Dirty” Sanchez’s one-mile record of 3:35 set at the 2012 Blue Sky Mile. Robin and Kaspar will be the biggest challengers to it and it is rumored that Kiefer Dixon will show up, widely considered the fastest sprinter in longboarding today. When asked a strategy, McGuirk said: “I plan on going crazy for one mile push insanely, ecstatically, and out of my mind fast for the Guinness Book World Record!”
