Longboarding for Peace In the Middle East | Concrete Wave

Concrete Wave worked with Surfing for Peace and the Peres Center for Peace to create a series of workshops in Jaffa, Sderot, East Jerusalem and Jericho. The demos took place in July and were incredibly successful.

Now to keep the project going Michael Brooke is looking for your generosity.

From Mr Brooke:

Longboarding For Peace – the who, what and why

My name is Michael Brooke and I have been riding skateboards for 37 years. I publish Concrete Wave – a magazine dedicatd to longboarding. We have over 100,000 readers worldwide.

I had a gut feeling that longboards could be used as a way to build peace between Arabs and Israeli children – so I decided to create Longboarding for Peace.

Concrete Wave worked with Surfing for Peace and the Peres Center for Peace to create a series of workshops in Jaffa, Sderot, East Jerusalem and Jericho. The demos took place in July and were incredibly successful.

Longboards seem to magcially transform the children (and adults) – there were smiles all around and people who normally wouldn’t interact with each other, began to do so. This program helps sow the seeds for peace because it is focused on people having fun and learning to trust one another.

We want to continue this program with the Arab and Israeli youth in Jaffa/Tel Aviv at the Peres Center for Peace.

Next Steps

This initiative will take place over 8 months. There will be weekly instruction. We will need this money to pay for a program co-ordinator, instructors and insurance. What we raise here at indiegogo.com goes DIRECTLY to the Peres Center for Peace Longboarding for Peace initiative.

The Impact

This is a unique program that combines a non-competitive activity with peace-building. We are starting small, but our plans are to expand to other areas.

If you’re overwhelmed by the situation in the Middle East, this is a program that brings it down to a human level – kids having fun and learning to live in peace.

Other Ways You Can Help

Feel free to spread the word…and start your own initiative to spread the joy of longboarding.
